The worker, based in Hong Kong, mistakenly believed that one of the participants was the company’s chief financial officer in the UK. Based on available evidence, all "participants" except the finance worker were imposters generated by AI technology.
As another example, Mark Read, the CEO of WPP, the world’s largest advertising consortium, was recently targeted by scammers using his voice clone and image, as well as the cloned image and voice of another WPP executive, to create a fake Microsoft Teams video. The imposters then used the fake video to persuade another WPP official to send them money and financial data. Thankfully, company officials discovered the scam before any funds were transferred.
